Any rule or request the builder cannot keep is named, with the reason. **Student names never leave your browser.** No account, no upload. ### The sample grade: 60 students in 3 classes #### 4A Ms Lindqvist 20 of 21 10 girls, 9 boys. Nothing here is saved. ### How it works 1. **Paste the grade.** One student per row: name, current class, and any of gender, reading and math bands 1 to 4, behaviour, English learner and support flags, and notes. A header row is read if there is one. 2. **Set the classes.** How many, a name and teacher for each, and a size cap. 3. **Add the rules.** Up to 3 ranked friend requests per student, keep-apart pairs, siblings together or apart, and teacher requests. 4. **Build.** Hard rules are never broken silently: any rule the builder cannot keep is named with the reason. Balance and friend requests are traded off, and every request that could not be met is listed with the reason. 5. **Review and print.** Move a student and the warnings update as you go. Lock the ones you are sure of and rebalance the rest. Print class lists, placement cards and the summary. ### What you get - **Lists you still decide** You know the children; the tool does not. It balances what you enter and shows its working. Every move is yours to make, with a warning if it breaks a rule. - **Requests handled in the open** Every friend request met or not met, every keep-apart pair honoured, and a plain reason for each request that could not be kept, ready to show a parent or a principal. - **Cards and lists that match** Class lists, placement cards, the principal summary and the requests not met sheet all come from the same placement, so nothing drifts when you move a student. ### Student names never leave your browser. A class list is children's names next to notes about reading, behaviour and support, so ClassSplit has no server to send them to. The balancing runs on this page, your grade is saved in this browser only, and there is no account and no upload. Keep a copy with the backup file whenever you like. We make no compliance claim about your school's data rules: this is a planning tool that keeps everything on your device. ### Guides - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/) - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/) - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/) - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/) - [Class placement guides](https://classsplit.app/guide/) ### Free to use Balanced class lists for a grade of up to 60 students in up to 3 classes are free with no sign up, and placing students by hand in the review grid is free at any size, with class lists, placement cards and the requests not met sheet. This page explains how ClassSplit counts, what each rule does and how to read what it tells you. The guides below take one job each, with worked examples computed by the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/). ### Guides 1. 01[How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/)7 steps from a grade list to balanced classes, with a worked example of 60 students in 3 classes computed by the builder. 2. 02[Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/)How many friends to ask for, how keep-apart and sibling rules work, what happens when rules contradict, and how an unmet request is explained. 3. 03[Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/)The planning card teachers fill in and the card that tells a family the new class and teacher, with example cards from the sample grade. 4. 04[How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/)Choosing which students join a 4/5 composite class and keeping it balanced, with a worked example of 36 Year 4 and 24 Year 5 students. 5. 05[The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/)What a principal checks before class lists are released, and a one page summary of the sample grade's balance and rules. 6. 06[Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/)Why class lists count as student records, what staying on the device means, and how placement tools compare on accounts, uploads and price. ### Hard rules, never broken silently 5 kinds of rule are hard, and the builder keeps each one: a class stays within its cap; two students in a keep-apart pair go in different classes; students who must be together (twins placed together, or any pair you mark) go in the same class; a teacher request (must be with, or must not be with, a named teacher) is kept; and a student you have locked stays where you put them. None is ever broken silently: when the rules cannot all hold, any rule the builder cannot keep is named with the reason. A grade can also carry grade levels for a combined class: a student is only placed in a class that takes their grade. ### What balanced means Every class is compared with the grade as a whole. If 48 percent of the grade are girls, a class of 20 should have about 10 girls; if 6 students across the grade have the behaviour support flag, 3 classes should have about 2 each. The builder measures class sizes, gender, reading bands 1 to 4, math bands 1 to 4, behaviour support, English learners, the support tag and the mix of current classes, and scores how far each class is from its share. The score is what it lowers; the per class counts are what you see. ### Friend requests Each student can name up to 3 friends in order. The first aim is that every student who asked has at least one of them in their class; the second is that the first choice is preferred to the third. A student with no requests is never penalised. Friend requests are soft: they are weighed against balance, and never against a hard rule. ### When two rules contradict Some rule sets cannot all hold. A pair marked both together and apart, a group that must be together but is larger than every cap, a student who must be with two different teachers, or more students than the caps add up to. The builder checks for these before it starts, names each conflict, and leaves the conflicting rule out of the build rather than breaking it silently. Fix the rule and build again. ### How the classes are built Students who must be together are joined into one unit first. Locked students and teacher requests are placed. The rest are placed one unit at a time, the most constrained first, each into the class where it adds the least imbalance. Then a search moves and swaps students thousands of times, keeping any change that lowers the score and, early on, some that raise it so it can escape a dead end, and it keeps the best split it has seen. Every move it tries keeps every hard rule. The search is seeded, so the same grade gives the same classes every time. It runs in a background worker on the page; 150 students take well under a second on a laptop. ### Why a request was not met Every request the builder reports as not met carries one of these reasons, on screen and on the printed sheet: - **Kept apart** Each friend asked for is kept apart from the student, or sits with someone they are kept apart from, so the request cannot be met without breaking a hard rule. - **Teacher or grade rule** The friend's class is one the student must not be in, one of them must be with a named teacher and the other cannot follow, or the two are in grade levels no single class takes. - **Class full** Moving the student to the friend's class, or the friend to theirs, would go over a class cap, and no swap fixes it without breaking a rule. - **Balance** The move is possible, but it would unbalance the classes more than the request is worth. The reason names the measure that would suffer most. - **Locked** The student or the friend is locked in a class by hand, and the other cannot join them there. ### Reviewing by hand The review grid shows each class as a column with its balance underneath. Drag a student to another class, or choose a class from the list, or use the arrow keys, and every warning updates while you move: a broken keep-apart pair, a split twin pair, a class over its cap, a student with none of their friends. Lock the placements you are sure of, then rebalance the rest: the builder starts from your current lists and moves as few students as it can. ### Pasting a grade Copy from any spreadsheet. With a header row, columns are matched by name: student or first and last name, current class, gender, reading, math, behaviour, English learner, support, notes, friend 1 to 3, keep apart and together. Without a header, the first column is the name and the second the current class. Two word and three word names are kept whole, and "Chen, Mia" in one cell is read as Mia Chen. ### Where the grade is kept In this browser, and nowhere else. There is no server: the balancing runs on the page and the grade is saved in the browser's own storage. A backup file moves it to another computer. To get there, put the whole grade in one list with the few details you balance on, collect friend requests and pairs to keep apart, then check the counts, adjust by hand, and have the principal sign off. ### The seven steps 1. **Gather the grade in one list.** One row per student: name, this year's class, and only the details you will balance on, such as gender, reading and math bands 1 to 4, and behaviour, English learner and support flags. 2. **Agree what balanced means before you start.** Decide as a team which measures matter and which matter most, so the lists are judged against the same yardstick. 3. **Collect friend requests and separations.** Up to three ranked friends per student, pairs who must be kept apart, and siblings or twins to keep together or apart. 4. **Set the classes, teachers and caps.** How many classes, who teaches each, the most students each can take, and any combined class and the grades it takes. 5. **Build a first draft.** Place every student without breaking a separation or a cap, keeping each class close to the grade's own mix and giving each child a friend. 6. **Check every class against the whole grade.** Compare the counts per class side by side and read every request that could not be met, with its reason. 7. **Review with the people who know the children.** Teachers, specialists and the principal adjust by hand, lock what is settled, rebalance the rest, and sign off. School placement policies read the same way from district to district. One lists academic skills, work habits and behaviour, relationships, gender, cultural diversity and class size; another lists the range of academic ability, the numbers of boys and girls, behaviour, special education needs and how personalities interact. A 2026 teacher guide adds learning plans, English learners and friendships. A study of three elementary schools found that schools collecting much the same data still decided very differently, which is why agreeing the measures first (step 2) matters. The sources below were read on the date shown. ### Worked example: 60 students into 3 classes The sample grade in the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/) is 60 invented Year 3 students in three classes, moving up to three Year 4 classes with a cap of 21. The grade has 30 girls and 28 boys, 8 English learners, 6 students with the behaviour flag and 7 with the support tag. 54 students named friends, and there are 8 keep-apart pairs and one pair of twins to keep together. First, the shortcut many teams are tempted by: move each class up whole. Every friend request is met, because most friends are in the same class now, but **4 keep-apart pairs end up together** and the balance drifts: | Class | Students | Girls, boys | Average reading band | Behaviour | English learners | Support | Friend met | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 4A | 20 | 8, 12 | 2.6 | 3 | 4 | 2 | 19 of 19 | | 4B | 20 | 13, 6 | 2.7 | 3 | 3 | 2 | 17 of 17 | | 4C | 20 | 9, 10 | 2.5 | 0 | 1 | 3 | 18 of 18 | Then the lists the builder makes from the same grade, with every keep-apart pair apart and the twins together: | Class | Students | Girls, boys | Average reading band | Behaviour | English learners | Support | Friend met | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 4A | 20 | 10, 9 | 2.6 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 19 of 19 | | 4B | 20 | 10, 9 | 2.7 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 16 of 16 | | 4C | 20 | 10, 10 | 2.5 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 19 of 19 | Every class now sits within one student of the grade's mix of girls and boys, the behaviour flags are spread two, two and two, and 54 of 54 students have a friend they asked for (33 have their first choice). The builder's imbalance score falls from 1705 to 93. The same grade, rules and seed give the same lists every time, so a colleague can rebuild them and check. ### Common mistakes - **Balancing on everything.** Every extra measure pulls against the others. Pick the few that matter to your school and switch the rest off. - **Promising friend requests.** A request is a preference. Say so to families, and keep the reason for any request not met. - **Checking classes one at a time.** A class can look fine alone and still hold most of the grade's behaviour flags. Compare every class side by side. - **Forgetting the new students.** Leave a seat or two below each cap for enrolments over the break. - **Letting the tool decide.** A balancing tool only balances what it is told. The teachers who know the children should review every list before it is shared. ### Sources - [Every Year Is a Fresh Start: 5 Tips for Making Class Lists Work for Everybody](https://www.coolcatteacher.com/create-balanced-class-lists-elementary/), Cool Cat Teacher Blog, 28 February 2026, sponsored by a placement software company. Lists are often shared with families shortly before the new year starts. **Should current classes simply move up together?** Rarely. A class that moves up whole keeps whatever imbalance it had, and every separation inside it. In the worked example on this page, carrying three classes forward broke four keep-apart pairs and left one class with 13 girls and 6 boys. **Who should see the lists before they are final?** The teachers who know the children this year, the specialists who support them, and the principal, who usually makes the final decision. Share them with families only after that review. ### More guides - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/) - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/) - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/) Last reviewed 27 September 2026. Ask each student for up to 3 friends in order, promise families only that the school will try to place each child with at least one of them, and never break an agreed separation to meet a friend request. When a request cannot be met, record the reason: a separation, a teacher or grade rule, a full class, or balance. ### How schools handle requests Published placement policies agree on the shape if not the details. One Australian primary school asks students to name up to five classmates and makes every effort to place each child with at least one. A US elementary school lets parents name students their child should not be placed with, and says it will try but cannot guarantee it; the same school does not take requests to place children together, or requests for a teacher. Another district says teacher teams keep some friends together and separate others. The sources are listed below with the date they were read. In the builder, the rules fall into two kinds: - **Hard rules**, never broken silently (any the builder cannot keep is named with the reason): keep-apart pairs, pairs that must be together (siblings or twins placed together, or any pair you mark), teacher requests, class caps and students you lock in place. - **Preferences**, weighed against balance: up to three ranked friend requests per student. Meeting at least one comes first; getting the first choice rather than the third comes second. Siblings and twins get their own rule because families differ: some want twins together, others apart. Mark the pair as siblings and choose together or apart, and it prints as a sibling rule on the principal summary. ### Worked example: the same grade at three friend weights The sample grade in the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/) has 54 students who named friends. The friend requests setting trades friends against balance. Built at each setting with the same seed: | Setting | Friend met | First choice | Largest girls and boys gap | Imbalance, friends aside | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Balance first | 52 of 54 | 35 | 1 | 26 | | Balanced with the classes | 54 of 54 | 33 | 1 | 39 | | Friends first | 54 of 54 | 30 | 1 | 50 | Balance first leaves 2 students without a friend in return for the most even classes. The default meets all 54, and friends first buys nothing more here while costing 11 more imbalance points. For most grades the default is the right place to start. Now a request that cannot be met. Suppose Leo Tanaka asked for Theo Lopez, Isaac Kim, Felix Fraser, and the school has agreed to keep Leo Tanaka apart from all three. The builder keeps every separation and puts this on the requests not met sheet, with the reason "Kept apart": > Leo Tanaka asked for Theo Lopez, Isaac Kim and Felix Fraser, but Leo Tanaka and Theo Lopez are kept apart. And a contradiction. Samuel Okafor and Arjun Okafor are twins to keep together. Add a rule keeping Samuel Okafor apart from another student, then a rule putting that student with Arjun Okafor. No placement can keep all three rules, so the builder says so before it places anyone: > Arjun Okafor and Leo Tanaka must be together, but that would put Samuel Okafor with Leo Tanaka, who are kept apart. The together rule is left out. ### Common mistakes - **Asking for one friend.** One name gives the placement nowhere to go. Two or three gives it room. - **Entering every parent wish as a separation.** Each keep-apart pair removes options for the whole grade. Enter the ones the school has agreed to. - **Typing a friend's name two ways.** "Mia" and "Mia Chen" match only when one student is called Mia. Check the notes the paste step shows. - **Hiding the reasons.** A family told "a separation elsewhere made it impossible" takes it better than silence. Keep the sheet for the principal. ### Sources - [Parent Feedback re Class Placement for 2021](https://woodendprimaryschool.edublogs.org/2020/10/13/parent-feedback-re-class-placement-for-2021-if-required/), Woodend Primary School, South Australia, 13 October 2020. Placement then aims for at least one of the three in the same class, which almost every grade can manage. Some schools ask for up to five names for the same reason: more names make it easier to honour one. **Is a friend request a promise?** No. It is a preference weighed against balance and never against a separation or a cap. Tell families that the school will try to place each child with at least one friend, not with a particular one. **Can parents ask for their child to be kept apart from another child?** Many schools accept that request with a reason, and try to honour it without guaranteeing it. In the builder a keep-apart pair is a hard rule: once entered, it is kept, and never broken silently (if the builder cannot keep it, it names it with the reason), so enter only the separations the school has agreed to. **What happens when two rules contradict each other?** The builder names the conflict before it places anyone. Keeping apart outranks keeping together, so a together rule that would force a separated pair into one class is left out and listed, never broken silently. ### More guides - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/) - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/) - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/) Last reviewed 27 September 2026. The planning card, filled in by this year's teacher, holds what the team balances on: the student's name, academic levels, behaviour and support notes, friends to keep together and students to keep apart. The card that goes home holds only the child's name, the new class, the teacher and the school year. Keep the two apart: nothing from the planning card belongs on the card a child carries. ### The planning card The traditional version is the pink and blue card: one per child, pink for girls and blue for boys, sorted into piles on a staffroom table until the piles look even. A typical printable template carries student details, an alert section, academic ratings, behaviour and a tally sheet for counting each pile. One educator's critique of the practice proposes a card built around strengths, interests, supportive friendships and separations instead of colour. The sources are listed below with the date they were read. Whatever the layout, a useful planning card answers the questions the team will ask at the table: - Name, and the class the child is in now. - Reading and math level, in bands the whole team uses the same way (1 to 4 works). - Behaviour support needed, English learner, and a plain support flag for a learning plan. - Up to three friends, in order, and anyone to keep apart, with siblings or twins noted. - One practical note, such as needing a seat near the front. In the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/) these are the columns you paste, and the class lists printout with details shows them per class. The support flag is a count to spread across classes: it never records a reason, and it never prints on a card. ### Example cards from the sample grade The built sample grade prints 60 cards on 8 sheets, grouped by this year's class (3A, 3B, 3C) so each teacher can cut and hand out their own. These are the first four, as they print: Next school year Rafael Ahmed Class **4B** Teacher: Mr Osei This year: 3A Next school year Rosa Ali Class **4A** Teacher: Ms Lindqvist This year: 3A Next school year Luca Bauer Class **4A** Teacher: Ms Lindqvist This year: 3A Next school year Ivy Costa Class **4C** Teacher: Ms Varga This year: 3A The school year line is yours to set when you print, for example "2027 to 2028". Notes, bands, flags and friends are left off by design, so a card can be handed out in a corridor without telling anyone anything private. ### When to hand them out Only after the lists are final and the principal has signed them off. Schools choose their own moment; one district in the sources posts lists no sooner than the Friday before school opens, so late enrolments can still be placed. Print a fresh set if anything changes after the first print: the cards always follow the current lists. ### Common mistakes - **Writing on the card that goes home.** A note about behaviour on a card is a note a classmate can read. - **Colour coding by gender on anything a child sees.** Keep balance counts on the planning side. - **Using different scales.** If one teacher's level 3 is another's level 2, the balance is fiction. The colour makes gender balance visible at a glance, and it is also the part most often criticised today. **What should never go on a card a child takes home?** Anything about learning, behaviour, support or other children. The card that goes home carries the name, the new class, the teacher and the school year, and nothing else. **Do I still need planning cards if I use a tool?** The tool replaces the sorting, not the thinking. The details a teacher would write on a planning card become the columns of the class list: bands, flags, friends and separations. The class lists printout with details is the planning view. **How do the printed cards come out?** Eight to a sheet, two across and four down, with cut lines, grouped by the class each child is in now so each teacher can hand out their own. ### More guides - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/) - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/) - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/) Last reviewed 27 September 2026. Then treat the combined class like any other: it should hold a fair share of girls and boys, of reading and math levels, and of behaviour and support needs, rather than only the most independent students. Tell the tool which grades each class takes, and let it choose who goes into the split while it balances all the classes together. ### Start with the numbers A combined class usually exists because enrolments do not divide evenly. A state education department's data notes list uneven enrolments and small schools as the usual reasons, alongside schools that choose mixed ages on purpose, and a university newsroom piece puts composite classes at about a quarter of the state's government school classes. With 36 in one year and 24 in the next, three classes of 20 means one class of Year 4s, one class of Year 5s and a 4/5 that takes the 16 Year 4s and 4 Year 5s left over. The sources are listed below with the date they were read. ### Who goes into the split Schools often reach for the most independent students, reasoning that they cope best with two curricula in one room. The cost is a split class that holds most of the grade's strong readers and none of its support needs, and two single year classes that hold the rest. The research summaries cited here point the other way: academic results in combined classes are mixed, social benefits are consistent, and the teaching matters more than the mix. A balanced split is a class that looks like the others. In the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/), give each class the grades it takes ("4", "5", or "4, 5" for the split) and each student a grade level. Grade levels are a hard rule: a Year 5 student is never placed in the Year 4 class. Everything else is balanced across all three classes at once. ### Worked example: a 4/5 class from 60 students For this example the sample grade's 60 invented students are marked as 36 Year 4 and 24 Year 5, and the classes are a Year 4 class, a 4/5 class and a Year 5 class, each with a cap of 20. The builder places them with every keep-apart pair apart and the twins together: | Class | Year 4 | Year 5 | Girls, boys | Average reading band | Support | Behaviour | Friend met | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 4R, Ms Lindqvist | 20 | 0 | 10, 10 | 2.7 | 3 | 2 | 17 of 18 | | 4/5, Mr Osei | 16 | 4 | 10, 9 | 2.6 | 3 | 3 | 17 of 17 | | 5R, Ms Varga | 0 | 20 | 10, 9 | 2.5 | 1 | 1 | 15 of 19 | The 4/5 class takes 16 Year 4 and 4 Year 5 students and ends up with the same reading average as its neighbours, give or take a tenth of a band, with its share of support and behaviour needs. 5 friend requests could not be met (3 for balance, 2 for teacher or grade rule). Because the year labels in this example were given out without regard to who is friends with whom, some students named friends in the other year level, and only 4 Year 5 seats are open in the 4/5 class. A typical line from the requests not met sheet: > Kenji Larsen asked for Liam Ali, Daniel Ortiz and Hugo Costa, but the teacher requests or grade levels for Kenji Larsen and Liam Ali do not allow the same class. ### Common mistakes - **Filling the split with the most independent students.** It leaves the other classes with every support need in the grade. - **Deciding the split last.** The combined class changes who is left for every other class. Balance all the classes together. - **Forgetting friend requests across year levels.** Collect them, and expect a few to go unmet. - **Keeping the same students in the split every year.** Families notice. Keep last year's lists to check. ### Sources - [Multi-age or composite classes in NSW government schools (2014 to 2024)](https://data.nsw.gov.au/data/dataset/nsw-education-multi-age-or-composite-classes-in-nsw-government-schools), NSW Department of Education, via Data.NSW, updated 14 October 2025. Australian schools usually call it a composite class; American schools often say split or combination class. **Why do schools form combined classes?** Mostly arithmetic: when the numbers in two year levels do not divide into full classes, a combined class takes the remainder. Small schools use them routinely, and some schools choose mixed ages on purpose. **Are students in combined classes behind?** The research summaries cited here find mixed academic results, no significant achievement difference in one review, and consistent social benefits, and they stress that the quality of teaching matters more than how the class is made up. **Can a friend in the other year level be placed with a student?** Only if both go to the combined class. When a friend request crosses year levels and the combined class has no room for both, the request is listed as not met with the grade level as the reason. ### More guides - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/) - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/) - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/) Last reviewed 27 September 2026. Under the table it lists every rule kept (separations, siblings, teacher requests) and points to each request not met with its reason. It lets the principal check balance in minutes and ask about the exceptions. ### What the principal checks A principal's guide published in 2026 describes lists passing from teachers to the principal and then the counselor, with the principal checking how learning plans, English learners, gender and academic levels are spread, plus past conflicts and separations. District policies say the same in fewer words: teachers recommend, specialists review, and the principal gathers the input and makes the final decision. The sources are listed below with the date they were read. A good summary answers those checks before they are asked: 1. Is every class within its cap, and are the sizes even? 2. Does each class have a fair share of girls and boys, and of each level? 3. Are behaviour and support needs spread, so no teacher has most of them? 4. Is every agreed separation honoured, and every sibling rule kept? 5. How many students have a friend, and why do the others not? 6. Does each new class mix students from every current class? ### Example summary for the sample grade This is the balance table the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/) prints for its sample grade of 60 invented students in three classes. Bands are counts of students in band 1, 2, 3 and 4. | Class | Students | Girls, boys | Reading 1 to 4 | Math 1 to 4 | Behaviour | EL | Support | Friend met | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | 4A, Ms Lindqvist | 20 of 21 | 10, 9 | 3 / 6 / 7 / 4 | 4 / 7 / 3 / 6 | 2 | 3 | 3 | 19 of 19 | | 4B, Mr Osei | 20 of 21 | 10, 9 | 2 / 6 / 8 / 4 | 3 / 6 / 4 / 7 | 2 | 3 | 2 | 16 of 16 | | 4C, Ms Varga | 20 of 21 | 10, 10 | 3 / 6 / 9 / 2 | 4 / 6 / 4 / 6 | 2 | 2 | 2 | 19 of 19 | Under the table, the rules and the mix: - Keep-apart pairs kept apart: 8 of 8. Twins kept together: 1 of 1. - Friend request met for 54 of 54 students who asked, first choice for 33. Requests not met: 0. - 4A: 7 from 3A, 6 from 3B, 7 from 3C. - 4B: 8 from 3A, 6 from 3B, 6 from 3C. - 4C: 5 from 3A, 8 from 3B, 7 from 3C. Read it the way the principal will. Every class is within one of 20 and within one of an even split of girls and boys. Each has two behaviour flags. No class draws fewer than five students from any current class. Nothing needs explaining, which is the point: a summary that needs no questions is a list that is ready for review by the teachers. ### Common mistakes - **Sending the lists without the numbers.** A principal reading names alone has to count by hand. - **Reporting averages only.** An average reading band hides a class with all the band 1 and band 4 readers. Show the counts per band. - **Leaving out what was not met.** The exceptions are what a principal is asked about by families. Attach the requests not met sheet. - **Printing the summary before the last hand change.** Print it from the final lists, on the day they are signed. ### Sources - [Balanced Class Lists: A Principal's Guide to Planning Ahead](https://www.coolcatteacher.com/e926/), Cool Cat Teacher Blog, 11 February 2026, guest post by a principal, sponsored by a placement software company. It shows counts per class. Names belong on the class lists and on the requests not met sheet, which the principal reads alongside it. **Who signs off class lists?** In most published school policies the principal makes the final decision, after teachers and specialists have given input. The summary is what makes that decision quick to check. **Is the principal summary free?** The principal summary is part of Premium. That matters because class lists are student records, and a list that never leaves the school device is one less thing for anyone to review. ### Why it matters Next year's class list is not just names. It sits beside reading levels, behaviour notes, learning plans and who should not sit with whom. US federal guidance for companies that serve schools names class lists as an example of education records and says a record a provider keeps for a school is still an education record; separate guidance limits access to school officials who need the record to do their job. Australia's privacy principles and the UK regulator's guidance on children's information set their own rules. The sources are listed below with the date they were read. None of this makes a tool unlawful to use; it means every copy of the list is something your school may need to account for. ### What local only means In a local only tool the page is a set of files. Once it has loaded, the paste, the balancing and the printing all happen on your computer. There is no account, so there is nothing on the other side to log in to, and nothing to delete when the year ends except what is in your browser and any backup file you saved. ### Worked example: what the sample grade leaves behind Load the sample grade in the [class builder](https://classsplit.app/split/), build it, and look in the browser's storage for this site. There is one entry, `classsplit.workspace.v1`, about 15 KB for 60 students with 14 fields each: name, current class, grade level, gender, two bands, three flags, notes, friends and teacher requests, plus the id that links them. That is the whole footprint. Clearing the site's data removes it, and the backup file on the Drafts tab is the only other copy, saved wherever you choose. ### How placement tools compare The tools below were read on their public pages on 27 September 2026. Prices are as published then and change; check before you buy. ClassSplit needs no account and uploads nothing. | Tool | What it is | Price | Account | Student data | | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | | Class Creator | Web class placement for schools, with teacher input forms | AUD 2.50 per student per year before GST, plus optional premium support at AUD 200 a year | Yes, a school account | Student data is uploaded to the service | | GeniusRoster | Web class roster builder with an AI assistant | Free up to 25 students and one class list build; Pro US$599 a year for up to 250; Unlimited US$999 a year | Yes | A CSV is uploaded to the service | | Balanced Allocate | Web allocation tool with a class placement use case | 14 day trial with no card, then AUD 19 a month for an individual or AUD 59 a month for a team of up to 5 | Yes | Data stays in the session and nothing is stored, by its own description | | Shibutz free tools | Free classroom tools: class size calculator, placement readiness quiz, random groups, seating charts | Free; class placement itself is a separate paid product | No for the free tools | Not a placement tool | School licensed tools add things a browser tool does not: teacher input forms, shared access for a team and support with a contract. If your school already pays for one, use it. ClassSplit is for the teacher or grade lead who needs balanced lists this week without an account or a procurement round. ### Common mistakes - **Trusting the word free.** A free tier that needs an account and an upload still holds your list. - **Forgetting the backup file.** A file of student information on a personal laptop is still a copy. Keep it where the school keeps such files, and delete it when the year starts. - **Typing more than you need.** A name and a few bands balance a grade. Leave health and family details out of every tool. - **Working on a shared computer.** Browser storage belongs to the device. Clear the site's data when you are done. ### Sources - [Responsibilities of Third-Party Service Providers under FERPA](https://studentprivacy.ed.gov/sites/default/files/resource_document/file/Vendor%20FAQ.pdf), US Department of Education, Privacy Technical Assistance Center, August 2015. Other countries have their own rules; ask your school which apply. **Does keeping data in the browser make a tool compliant?** No tool can promise that. Keeping student names on the device means there is no provider holding them, which removes one question from the review, but your school's rules about devices, backups and printing still apply. **How can I tell whether a website uploads what I paste?** Read its privacy page and look for an account: a service that saves your lists between devices must store them somewhere. A page that works with no account and says it has no server keeps them in your browser, and it keeps working with the network switched off once it has loaded. **Is ClassSplit affiliated with any placement software company?** ClassSplit is not affiliated with any school, school district, education department, student information system or class placement software company. ### More guides - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/) - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/) - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/) - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/) - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/) Last reviewed 27 September 2026. You paste the students, set how many classes there are with a size cap and a teacher for each, and add friend requests, keep-apart pairs, sibling rules and teacher requests. It places every student and keeps the hard rules, never broken silently: any rule it cannot keep is named with the reason. It balances the classes and lists every request it could not meet with the reason. Then it prints class lists, a placement card per student, a principal summary and a requests not met sheet. **Who is it for?** Elementary and middle school teachers and grade leads who build next year's class lists, and the principals who sign them off. It works for any group split into groups with caps and pairing rules, such as a year level into homerooms. **Where are the student names kept?** In this browser, on this device, and nowhere else. There is no server and no account: the balancing runs on the page, the grade is saved in the browser's own storage, and nothing you paste is uploaded. Save a backup file to move a grade to another computer. **Which rules are hard rules?** Class size caps, keep-apart pairs, must-be-together pairs such as twins placed together, teacher requests and students you have locked. The builder keeps them, and never breaks one silently: any rule it cannot keep is named with the reason. If two of your rules contradict each other, for example a twin pair that is also a keep-apart pair, the builder says so before it starts and leaves one rule out rather than breaking it silently. Keeping apart outranks keeping together. **What does balanced mean here?** Class sizes within one student of each other where the caps allow, and each class close to the grade's own mix of gender, reading bands, math bands, behaviour support, English learners, the support tag and students from each current class. Balance is traded off against friend requests; hard rules are never traded. **How are friend requests handled?** Each student can name up to 3 friends in order. The builder tries to give every student who asked at least one of them, and prefers the first choice. A request is a preference, not a promise: when one is not met, the requests not met sheet names the student, the friends asked for and the reason, such as a keep-apart rule or a full class. **Is the result the same every time?** Yes. The builder is deterministic: the same grade, rules and seed always give the same classes. Try another arrangement uses a new seed when you want to see a different split that keeps the same rules. **Can I move students by hand?** Yes, and you should. Drag a student to another class, or choose a class from the list or use the arrow keys, and every warning is checked again as you move. Lock a student to keep them where they are, then rebalance the rest around them. **What is the support tag for?** It is a plain flag you can set for a student who has a learning plan or extra support, so those students are spread across classes rather than grouped by accident. It is a count to balance, nothing more. The tool never asks for or stores health information, and it gives no advice about any student. **Does it decide which class a child goes to?** No. It balances what you enter and explains what it could not honour. The placement decision stays with you and your school, and the lists should be checked by the people who know the children before they are shared. **What does it cost?** Balanced class lists for a grade of up to 60 students in up to 3 classes are free, and placing students by hand in the review grid is free at any size, with class lists, placement cards and the requests not met sheet. A paid plan adds larger grades, saved drafts and comparison, CSV, the principal summary and teacher request rules. **Is it affiliated with any school system or placement software?** ClassSplit is not affiliated with any school, school district, education department, student information system or class placement software company. --- # Premium plans for the class placement tool, ClassSplit URL: https://classsplit.app/premium/ Last reviewed: 2026-09-27 > Premium adds grades over 60 students or 3 classes, saved drafts, comparison, CSV, the principal summary and teacher rules. ## ClassSplit Premium The class builder is the free product: balanced lists for up to 60 students in 3 classes, the review grid at any size, class lists and placement cards. It does not balance a free grade any differently. **What happens if I import a file with several drafts on the free plan?** Everything in the file is kept. The draft that was open in the file stays editable, and the others open read-only: you can view, print and export them, and Premium makes them editable again. Nothing is deleted. **How is my access stored?** Purchases are handled by RevenueCat and Stripe. An anonymous purchase id is kept in this browser so ClassSplit recognises your Premium on this device. Your class lists are never sent to either of them. Keep your receipt email for recovery. **I bought Premium on another browser or computer. How do I get it here?** Open the restore page and paste the access code shown on this Premium page, or the one from your receipt. Premium moves to this browser instantly. Your drafts move separately: save a backup file on the old browser and restore it here. **Can I cancel, and can I get a refund?** Yes. The weekly and yearly plans renew automatically and can be cancelled anytime from the link in your receipt email; lifetime is a one time payment. Refunds are covered by the Refunds section of the terms of use, which is the one place the refund window is stated. **Lost your access code?** Your code is shown on this page whenever you have Premium here, and it is in your purchase receipt email. If you cannot find it, reply to your receipt email from the address you paid with, and access can be recovered from there. --- # Privacy: student names never leave your browser, ClassSplit URL: https://classsplit.app/privacy/ Last reviewed: 2026-09-27 > How ClassSplit handles a class list: student names are balanced, saved and printed in your browser, and nothing you type is ever sent anywhere. ## Privacy: student names never leave your browser How ClassSplit handles a class list: student names are balanced, saved and printed in your browser, and nothing you type is ever sent anywhere. Last updated 28 September 2026 ### What you type about students A class list is children's names next to notes about learning and behaviour. ClassSplit needs a name only to tell one student from another, so any label works: a first name and initial, a nickname or a number if you prefer. The optional fields are coarse on purpose: a gender letter, reading and math bands 1 to 4, and three yes or no flags (behaviour support, English learner, support). It never asks for a birth date, a photo, an address, a parent's details, a student number or any health information, and it has no field where one would go. Notes are free text; keep them short and practical. ### What stays on your device The balancing runs in your browser, in a background worker on this page. There is no server side to this site: it is a set of static files. Nothing you paste, build, move or print is transmitted anywhere, and there are no analytics on the class builder. Your work is written to your browser's own local storage, under keys beginning with `classsplit.` and nowhere else. It belongs to one browser on one device: it does not follow you to another computer, it is not backed up by us, and nobody else can read it. Clearing site data for this site removes it permanently. Use the backup button on the Drafts tab to keep a copy as a file; that file is saved wherever you choose and is yours to keep or delete. Treat it like any other file of student information. ### No accounts There is no sign up, no sign in, no email capture and no password. Every page, including the class builder and every printout, works without identifying yourself in any way. ### What is collected No account, no advertising identifiers, and nothing you enter. Standard web server logs kept by the static host may record the request for a page, its time and a network address, in the ordinary way any web server records a request. ### Purchases If paid plans are offered, a purchase is handled by RevenueCat and Stripe, who receive what a payment needs, such as your email address and card, and never your class lists. An anonymous purchase id is stored in this browser so your access is recognised here. ### Typeface Text is set in Schibsted Grotesk by Bakken and Baeck for Schibsted Media, under the SIL Open Font License 1.1. The font file is served from this site, so no font service sees your visit. The licence sits beside it at [/fonts/OFL.txt](https://classsplit.app/fonts/OFL.txt). ### Cookies ClassSplit sets no cookies of its own and carries no advertising or cross site tracking scripts. ### Your school's rules Keeping the data on your device is a design choice, not a compliance certificate. ClassSplit makes no claim that using it satisfies any law or policy about student records. Follow your school's rules about where student information may be kept, and about the device you use. ### Children The site is a planning tool for teachers and school leaders and is not directed at children. ### Changes If this policy changes in a way that affects what is collected, the change will appear on this page. ### Contact Questions about privacy go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. Since nothing is stored on a server, most requests are answered by telling you which local storage keys to clear. --- # Terms of use for the class placement tool, ClassSplit URL: https://classsplit.app/terms/ Last reviewed: 2026-09-27 > The terms that apply when you use ClassSplit, the limits of what a class balancing aid can be relied on for, and what stays free for every teacher. ## Terms of use The terms that apply when you use ClassSplit, the limits of what a class balancing aid can be relied on for, and what stays free for every teacher. Last updated 28 September 2026 ### What this is ClassSplit is a planning aid that turns the students, classes and rules you type into proposed class lists, and prints documents from them. It balances what you enter; it does not know the children, so it does not decide where any child goes and gives no advice about any student. A request it reports as not met is not met only under the rules you gave it. Placement decisions stay with you and your school. Check the lists and every printout before they are shared with staff or families. ### Names and student information Type whatever you need to tell students apart and no more. Nothing you enter leaves your browser. You remain responsible for following your school's rules about student information on the device you use. ClassSplit makes no fairness, legal or compliance claim about the lists it proposes. ### Names used Software and organisations are named in the guides only to describe them, with the date their public pages were read. ClassSplit is not affiliated with any school, school district, education department, student information system or class placement software company. ### What is free Balanced class lists for a grade of up to 60 students in up to 3 classes are free to use with no account and stay that way, as does placing students by hand in the review grid at any size, friend requests, keep-apart pairs and sibling rules, class lists, placement cards, the requests not met sheet, and JSON backup and restore. When billing is enabled, a paid tier adds larger grades, saved drafts and comparison, CSV, the principal summary and teacher request rules on top of that. Nothing free is moved behind a gate to make room for it. ### Your data Anything the site remembers is stored by your own browser on your own device. You can clear it at any time, we cannot recover it, and it does not follow you to another device. Save a backup file regularly while you work on next year's lists. ### Refunds Not happy with a purchase? Email [socialreminderinfo@gmail.com](mailto:socialreminderinfo@gmail.com) within 14 days of a first purchase, or within 7 days of a renewal, and we will refund it. Send the message from the email address you used at checkout, and include: - the email address used at checkout (if you are writing from a different address) - your access code, shown on the [Premium](https://classsplit.app/premium/) page while you have Premium on the browser you purchased from - roughly when you purchased, and which plan (weekly, yearly or lifetime) - the last 4 digits of the card, if you have the receipt handy That is everything needed to find the purchase and process the refund. This policy does not limit any statutory rights you may have. ### Acceptable use Use the site to build class lists. Do not scrape it at a rate that degrades it for other people, and do not enter more about a student than you need to balance the classes. ### Warranty and liability The site is provided as it is, without warranty of any kind. To the extent the law allows, ClassSplit is not liable for any loss arising from its use or from reliance on class lists it proposes. Check every list before you share it with staff or families. ### Contact Questions, and reports of a list that breaks a hard rule it should have kept, go to socialreminderinfo@gmail.com. A hard rule broken by the builder is a defect and gets fixed.
