# ClassSplit > Split a grade into balanced classes with friend requests and keep-apart pairs, then print class lists and placement cards. Free, no sign up, names stay in your browser. ClassSplit is a browser only class placement tool for elementary and middle school teachers and principals building next year's class lists. The teacher pastes the grade (name, current class, and optionally gender, reading and math bands 1 to 4, a behaviour support flag, an English learner flag, a support tag and notes), sets the number of classes with a size cap and a teacher for each, and adds rules: up to three ranked friend requests per student, keep-apart pairs, sibling or twin rules (together or apart) and teacher requests (a student must be with, or must not be with, a named teacher). A deterministic solver in a Web Worker places every student and keeps the hard rules (caps, keep-apart, must be together, teacher rules, locked students), never broken silently: any rule it cannot keep is named with the reason. It then balances class sizes, gender, reading and math bands, support flags and the mix of current classes, and tries to give every student at least one ranked friend. It lists every request it could not meet with the reason. The review grid lets the teacher drag students between classes with live warnings, lock students and rebalance the rest. It prints class lists, one placement card per student with class and teacher, a principal summary and a requests not met sheet, with CSV. Student names stay in the browser. ## Tool - [Home](https://classsplit.app/): What the class placement tool does, who it is for, and why student names never leave your browser. - [Class list builder](https://classsplit.app/split/): The app: paste a grade, set classes and rules, get balanced class lists, adjust them by drag, and print lists and placement cards. ## Guides - [Class placement guides](https://classsplit.app/guide/): How the builder balances classes, what each rule does, how requests are scored, with links to every guide. - [How to make balanced class lists for next year](https://classsplit.app/guide/balanced-class-lists/): 7 steps from a grade list to balanced classes, with a worked example of 60 students in 3 classes computed by the builder. - [Handling friend requests and keep-apart pairs](https://classsplit.app/guide/friend-requests-and-keep-apart/): How many friends to ask for, how keep-apart and sibling rules work, what happens when rules contradict, and how an unmet request is explained. - [Student placement cards: what to put on them](https://classsplit.app/guide/placement-cards/): The planning card teachers fill in and the card that tells a family the new class and teacher, with example cards from the sample grade. - [How to balance a split or combined grade class](https://classsplit.app/guide/split-classes/): Choosing which students join a 4/5 composite class and keeping it balanced, with a worked example of 36 Year 4 and 24 Year 5 students. - [The class placement summary for your principal](https://classsplit.app/guide/principal-summary/): What a principal checks before class lists are released, and a one page summary of the sample grade's balance and rules. - [Class placement without uploading student data](https://classsplit.app/guide/no-upload-class-placement/): Why class lists count as student records, what staying on the device means, and how placement tools compare on accounts, uploads and price. ## Reference - [FAQ](https://classsplit.app/faq/): Where student names are kept, what the rules mean, what it costs, and what the builder does not decide. ## Policies - [Premium](https://classsplit.app/premium/): What a paid plan adds when billing is switched on. - [Privacy](https://classsplit.app/privacy/): Student names are placed, saved and printed in the browser and never uploaded. - [Terms of use](https://classsplit.app/terms/): What a class balancing aid can be relied on for, names and your data. ## Pricing Balanced class lists solved for a grade of up to 60 students in up to 3 classes, the review grid at any size, class lists, placement cards and the requests not met sheet are free with no sign up. A paid plan adds larger grades, saved drafts and comparison, CSV, the principal summary and teacher request rules; prices are shown at checkout. ## What it is not - Not affiliated: ClassSplit is not affiliated with any school, school district, education department, student information system or class placement software company. - Not the decision maker: placement is the school's decision; the tool only balances what the teacher enters and explains what it could not honour. - Not a student information system: no accounts, grades, attendance, report cards or parent contact. - Not a clinical or compliance tool: a support tag is a count to spread across classes, never a label, and the tool makes no fairness or legal compliance claim. - Not an uploader: student names are never sent anywhere; there is no server. ## Optional - [Full text of every page](https://classsplit.app/llms-full.txt): the guides, FAQ and policies as Markdown, in one file. - Support: socialreminderinfo@gmail.com
